APPX Software Library

Appendix E: APPX Environment Variables

RDBMS - Oracle Variables

APPX_ORACLE_CONNECT

Specifies what user ID and password to use to login to Oracle. The database being requested can also be specified. The format of the string depends on the version of the server, the network library being used, the operating system, and other factors. Knowing how to login to Oracle from the command line is necessary before you can tell APPX how to do it.

This variable has been superseded by FMS control strings, but still exists within APPX. It is more flexible to use FMS control strings, and that is a better option. This is presented here for completeness.

Valid values: installation-dependent connect string

Default value: not set

APPX_ORACLE_FIRST_ROWS

“Hints” to Oracle that you want it to optimize its query processing so that the first few rows of a query are returned quickly. The alternative is to optimize the queries so that all rows are returned as quickly as possible. APPX generally displays a screen full of records and then stops, awaiting user interaction (rather than retrieving all records immediately). Therefore, setting this variable can improve Oracle’s performance.

Valid values: 1

Default value: not set

APPX_ORACLE_LIB

Specifies the Oracle library location for dynamic linking. Usually the preset Oracle-based ORACLE or ORAHOME environment variables point to the home directory for the user ‘oracle’. In some cases, however, you may want APPX to dynamically link against a set of libraries that are not in the usual place (for example, when testing a new version). In that case, set APPX_ORACLE_LIB to the alternate location, and it will override Oracle’s setting.

Valid values: path to Oracle library

Default value: not set

APPX_ORACLE_PARAM_INSERTS

Specifies that parameterized INSERTs should be used when inserting data into Oracle tables. This variable has been superseded by the new RDBMS-related options you can enter for FMS Groups and in File Specifications on the Database Management menu. These options are more flexible than environment variables and are the preferred choice. This information is presented for completeness.

Valid values: 1

Default value: not set

APPX_ORIO_LIBS

Specifies the names of the Oracle libraries that APPX references when dynamically linking in Oracle functionality. The default list should be sufficient, but may need to be altered for different versions of Oracle, or for the same version on different operating systems. If APPX complains about a symbol not found, after you have installed a new version of Oracle, that is a symptom of the need to change the list of libraries.

Valid values: list of Oracle libraries containing functions used by the APPX/ORACLE interface

Default value: libnet.so,libclntsh.so
