Appendix E: APPX Environment Variables

Printing and Job Submission Variables

APPX_BG_SCRIPT

Tells APPX to use a different script to submit batch jobs marked as “Separate Task? = Y”. This is commonly used to interface APPX to batch job scheduling systems. APPX_BG_SCRIPT assumes a default starting point of APPXPATH. Any directories it specifies must therefore be a lower level under the “{appx.engine location}/data” or “{appx engine location}\data” directory.

Valid values: path to valid batch job submission script or .exe

Default value: not set

APPX_PREFIX

Specifies the drive prefix of the APPX installation on an NT Server for the UniQue Print spooler (under APPX for Windows). For more information, see www.appx.com/unique-nt.html or www.appx.com/unique-nt-pres.html.

Valid values: //C/, //D/, etc.

Default value: not set

APPX_PRT_FI_DIR

Sets the disk location where print files are created and stored on your system. This variable must end with a forward slash (/) on Unix, and a backslash (\) on Windows.

Valid values: path to a write-enabled directory

Default value: %APPXPATH%\print\{userID} (Windows) or /tmp/ (Unix)

APPX_PRT_FI_SIZE

Specifies how much space to pre-allocate for a print file, for VMS only. Since APPX is no longer supported on the VAX, this is included only for completeness.

Valid values: integers

Default value: not set

APPX_PRT_SCRIPT

Tells APPX to use a different script or .exe to process print jobs. In Unix, this variable is commonly set to “appx_print.UniQue.Unix” when users are running the UniQue print spooler. The script or .exe must be in the APPXPATH directory. Attempting to fully qualify the script’s location with a full path (starting with / or \) will not work.

Valid values: valid print script or .exe within the APPXPATH directory

Default values: %APPXPATH%\winprint.exe (Windows), $APPXPATH/appx_print (Unix)

APPX_PRT_SCRIPT_HIDE

Invokes the APPX_PRT_SCRIPT without displaying a visible window on the screen (Windows only).

Valid values: 1

Default value: not set

APPX_SUPPRESS_UID_SWITCH

Tells APPX not to change print file ownership; all print files will remain owned by ‘appx’ (Unix only). Normally, when APPX creates a print file it changes the print file’s ownership to the login ID of the user that generates the file. This provides a measure of security so that multiple users are unable to read each other’s print files. In some situations you may want all print files owned by ‘appx’ rather than individual users.

Valid values: 1

Default value: not set
