Appendix E: APPX Environment Variables

Debugging - Presentation Server Variables

APPX_NET_LOG

Specifies the log file name into which APPX will write debugging information. If you experience problems with the Windows or GUI Client, APPX/Net, or APPX/ODBC connecting to your appxd or WinAppxD APPX/Servers, set this variable and APPX_NET_LOG_MASK on both your server and client systems to generate debug logs.

It is most useful to do this on the server, since usually Presentation Client/Server startup issues involve user authentication or security, especially on NT. However, it is useful to do it on the client, too.

On NT especially, look for a line of the form: “LogonUser() failed with {number}”. If you see this line, please let APPX Technical Support know which error number you are receiving.

This is the lower level of a two-level protocol; the higher level is specified by APPX_NETIO_LOG. Both should be enabled when debugging APPX/Net or APPX/ODBC. See Debugging APPX/Net or APPX/ODBC (Remote) remarks below for more information.

Valid values: path to a write-enabled log file

Default value: not set

APPX_NET_LOG_MASK

Specifies the debug level for APPX_NET_LOG. When debugging, this variable should almost always be set to 0xFFFFFFFF.

Valid values: hex numbers between 0x00000000 and 0xFFFFFFFF

Default value: 0x00000000

Debugging APPX/Net or APPX/ODBC (Remote)

When debugging APPX/Net or APPX/ODBC to remote APPX data problems, there are two levels of APPX/Net protocol that can be logged: APPX_NET_LOG (the lower level) and APPX_NETIO_LOG (the upper level). Protocol is the mechanism by which the client and server talk to each other.

The lower level (NET LOG) is common to both APPX/Net and the APPX Presentation Server.

Lower level protocol on the client is monitored by using the environment variables APPX_NET_LOG and APPX_NET_LOG_MASK. For example:

APPX_NET_LOG=C:\net.log

APPX_NET_LOG_MASK=0xFFFFFFFF

Lower level protocol on the server side is monitored by using the environment variables APPX_NETIO_SERVER and APPX_NET_LOG_MASK. For example:

APPX_NETIO_SERVER=/tmp/netio.server.log

APPX_NET_LOG_MASK=0xFFFFFFFF

Upper level protocol on the client side is not being logged as of 4.0.a.

Upper level protocol on the server side is monitored by using the environment variables APPX_NETIO_LOG and APPX_NETIO_CODE. For example:

APPX_NETIO_LOG=/tmp/netio.log

APPX_NETIO_CODE=0xFFFFFFFF

When running APPX/ODBC to remote APPX data, you also have APPX/ODBC logging on the client side:

APPX_ODBC_LOG=C:\appxodbc.log

APPX_ODBC_CODE=0xFFFFFFFF
