Chapter 8: Routine operation and compatibility
APPX ODBC and external database interfaces
APPX 6.2.1 can read encrypted native APPXIO files through APPX ODBC. The tested 6.2.1 configuration returned the expected values from an encrypted file, including a unique test value after a clean restart. Before converting files used by Excel, reports, or other ODBC clients, complete Check ODBC access before converting a file. See ODBC access in the 6.2.1 test for the tested configuration and results.
The APPX side of the connection needs the correct administration context, registration, and effective encryption settings. The standard desktop ODBC DSN has no additional APPX file-encryption key field. Retain the applicable APPX and ODBC access controls. Protect client query results and exports whenever a query succeeds. File encryption is separate from securing the client connection and server network access.
Do not confuse these two directions:
| Connection | Where the data resides | APPXIO encryption |
|---|---|---|
| Excel or another client reads native APPXIO through APPX ODBC | Native APPXIO files on the APPX side | Native storage can be encrypted; encrypted-file ODBC access requires its own compatibility check |
| APPX accesses SQL Server through an external database interface, including ODBC FMS | SQL Server tables | Does not encrypt those tables |
| APPX accesses Oracle through its Oracle interface | Oracle tables | Does not encrypt those tables |
Verify the exact gateway, driver, client, permissions, and character handling used at your site. Use the applicable APPX ODBC cookbook for that connection's setup.
