Chapter 5: A Typical Input Process

Introduction

An input process allows you to look at records in a file (inquire mode), or to perform file maintenance activities (add new records, delete old records, or change existing records). You choose the mode you want by selecting the appropriate option (Add, Delete, Change, Inquire). When you first invoke the input process, it will default to one of the four modes, depending on how the application was designed. You can change the mode at any time, as described later in this chapter.

An input process screen contains one or more highlighted items, each identified with a corresponding label (such as Alpha Code). An item that allows user input is enclosed in a field box. Some items may be displayed but not allow user input; this is controlled by the design of the application. A sample input process is shown in Figure 5.
