Fix Missing Files When the Gateway Will Not Start

Use this procedure only after installing Microsoft's x86 runtime and confirming that the specific gateway build still needs the files below. Ask APPX Support for a complete matching package first. The following separately sourced files reproduce the tested configuration when a complete package is unavailable. Do not apply the repair to a gateway that already starts and queries successfully.

The specific 5.5.3 gateway package tested on October 14, 2026 requires three 32-bit ICU 59 files and the 32-bit Boost Regex 1.71 file. Put these files beside AppxODBC.exe in C:\Program Files (x86)\AppxODBCserver\bin:

  • icuuc59.dll
  • icuin59.dll
  • icudt59.dll
  • boost_regex-vc142-mt-x32-1_71.dll

Obtain ICU from the official APPX 6.2.1 32-bit gateway package, extracting only the runtime files. Obtain Boost from the Boost project's 1.71.0 MSVC 14.2 32-bit binaries. Keep the 5.5.3 gateway executable.

  1. Save the two downloads as AppxODBCserver_windows-32.exe and boost_1_71_0-msvc-14.2-32.exe in a working folder.
  2. Open Command Prompt as administrator in that folder. Check the Boost download with:
certutil.exe -hashfile "boost_1_71_0-msvc-14.2-32.exe" SHA256

The expected SHA-256 is 29D623991A2B01EE605EF5A4B01181A87A26D108C5BFFBFE5C715A7FCAC4FAB6. Extract the matching package:

.\boost_1_71_0-msvc-14.2-32.exe /VERYSILENT /SUPPRESSMSGBOXES /NORESTART /SP- /DIR=C:\APPX-Boost-171

Allow several minutes for extraction. The required DLL is C:\APPX-Boost-171\lib32-msvc-14.2\boost_regex-vc142-mt-x32-1_71.dll.

  1. Download prepare-553-gateway-runtime.ps1 into the same folder. This helper extracts and verifies the required files. Close active ODBC clients, then run these commands separately:
sc.exe stop "Appx ODBC Data Gateway Server for Windows"
powershell.exe -NoProfile -File .\prepare-553-gateway-runtime.ps1 -IcuInstaller .\AppxODBCserver_windows-32.exe -BoostDll "C:\APPX-Boost-171\lib32-msvc-14.2\boost_regex-vc142-mt-x32-1_71.dll"

The script checks the APPX source package hash, extracts only the three ICU files, checks all four DLL hashes, preserves existing gateway copies in its work folder, and copies the verified files into the 5.5.3 gateway's bin directory. It refuses an existing work folder; use -WorkDirectory with a new path for a separate attempt. Return to Start and check the gateway.

Verification: the four DLL hashes match the working test gateway. The extraction helper also passed its hash checks.
