Alpha Domains

An alpha domain can contain letters, numbers, and special characters, such as #, $, and &. Examples include names, addresses, descriptions, and certain account numbers or serial numbers.

The Alpha Domains overlay, shown in Figure 2-3-3, allows you to add Alpha specific attributes to those already defined for domains. The alpha domain overlay displays after you complete the entries on the domains screen if the domain Type you select is ALPHA.

The Alpha Domains overlay contains the following fields:

·    Length designates the number of character positions, or length, of this domain.

·    Lowercase OK? indicates whether or not a modifiable item on an interactive screen can be entered in upper- and lowercase letters. Click the checkbox to toggle between “yes” iconcheckyes.png and “no” iconcheckno.png values. If “no” iconcheckno.png, the entry is stored and displayed exclusively as uppercase, regardless of how a user enters the information. This entry does not affect ILF statements. A lowercase value established with a statement displays as lowercase, even if this specification prohibits lowercase entries. The default is “yes” iconcheckyes.png.

·    Descriptive provides a longer, more easily understood alternative to Domain Name, one that is not required to be unique within an application. If blank at all default levels, Domain Name is used. Because Descriptive is less cryptic and can be more flexibly formatted than Domain Name, it is easier to understand. As a result, the system uses Descriptive when communicating with users. Descriptive is used, for example, when the value of a domain displays to a user on a standard image, such as the Select Access Path display or an APPX-generated subheading.

·    Column Hdgs designates up to two lines of column heading text. The APPX output process facility uses this text to generate standard column heading images for Start of Page and Start of Range class frames. For cosmetic reasons, the length of headings should not exceed the length of a field itself. Refer to Standard Column Heading Image for additional information.
